The Short Answers #2

2a. The real question is this — are you making more money than you did in a job? Or are your employees making more money than you are? The reality is that few small business people make as much money as they could in the right job. So this is NOT a valid reason for going into small business.

2b. The real question is, now that you have all your personal and family assets at risk — including your home, your redundancy package, superannuation payout or other nest-eggs — are you any more secure financially than you were in a job? Or do your employees sleep more peacefully at night than you do? The reality is that few small business people are as secure as you could be in the right job. So this is NOT a valid reason for going into small business.

2c. The real question is this — are you less dependent on other people, and are fewer people dependent on you, than was the case in a job? People like your staff, your family, your shareholders/partners, your bankers, creditors, debtors, suppliers, customers... you get the message. The reality is that most small business people are more dependent on others than ever they were in a job. So this is NOT a valid reason for going into small business, either.

2d. The real question is this — are you LESS stressed, anxious, confused, worried, irritated, angry, frustrated or bewildered than you were in a job? Or are your employees getting more job satisfaction and less stress than you? The reality is that any satisfaction you gain from being in small business is often lost in the confusion and anxiety — or you’re just too exhausted or distracted to enjoy it! So this is NOT a valid reason to go into small business, either.

2e. Are you kidding? NOT ONE of them is a valid reason for being in business!

2f. You’re absolutely right! But you’ve missed the REAL reason — so you haven’t yet answered the question. See answer 2h below.

2g. Being “your own boss” is the most lethally dangerous perspective you can have on small business success. The reality is that, when you were employed by someone else, you probably suspected that your boss was an incompetent ignoramus. Now that you’re “self-employed” you can be absolutely certain that your new boss is! (The very notion of “self-employment” guarantees it.)

See Resource Information on The Right Reason for Going Into Business and the false perspective of self-employment.

2h. Congratulations! This is the ONLY valid reason to go into small businessbecause it’s the ONLY thing you can’t do in a job, where you trade a FIXED amount of time for a FIXED amount of money. (If you want to increase your money in a job, you have to increase the time you work or the value of your time. But it’s your BOSS who decides that, not you.)

Unnecessary risk makes no sense. When you can make more money, have more security, more independence and more satisfaction in a job — with less risk — it makes no sense at all to put your relationships, your health and your assets on the line for the wrong reasons!
